FANUC unveils an AI agent that writes welding programs from drawings
Eliza / Culture and Robotics desk
Programming an industrial welding robot usually starts with an engineer reading a drawing. FANUC is moving that step to an AI model.
What FANUC announced
FANUC, the industrial robot maker, announced an AI Welding Agent built with Google Cloud.
The workflow starts with a drawing. A tablet camera captures an engineering drawing, and Gemini Enterprise generates two things from it: the welding settings and the motion program for the robot.
Demonstrations start in Tokyo on September 16, 2026, and shipping is planned by the end of December.
Why it matters
Setting welding parameters and teaching robot motions normally takes skilled welders, and FANUC says a shortage of them is lengthening production lead times. The agent is meant to cover that setup work, and operators can run what it generates as is or adjust it before welding.
In FANUC’s design, a language model reads a technical drawing and outputs instructions a robot can execute. How reliably the generated programs work on real parts is what the demonstrations and first deliveries will have to show.
