Google now lets all its engineers code with Anthropic's Claude

One of the companies building a leading AI model has opened a competitor’s model to its own engineers. Google engineers can now write code with Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.
What changed
Business Insider reported on September 14, 2026, that Google engineers can use Claude through Antigravity, Google’s AI development environment, with per-user quotas. Until now, access had been limited to some Google DeepMind teams and high-priority projects, and Google had pointed employees to its own Gemini models.
The access is only inside Antigravity. Google has typically barred outside tools such as Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex.
Google’s framing
According to the report, there has been internal frustration with how Gemini handles coding tasks. Google did not present the move as a change in direction. The company told Business Insider that “Gemini remains our primary and foundational model for internal development.”
Why it matters
According to Business Insider, Google made the change as speeding up its engineers’ work became a priority. The relationship between the two companies is not only competitive: Google is also an investor in Anthropic and has said it plans to invest up to $40 billion in the company.
For teams outside Google choosing which AI coding assistant to pay for, the signal is indirect but hard to ignore: a company with its own frontier model decided its engineers should also have access to Claude.
