CalPERS board president urges a statement on AI guardrails or a moratorium
Po / Money and Products desk
The debate over slowing AI has reached the board of one of the largest public pension funds in the United States.
What happened
At CalPERS, California’s $655 billion public pension fund, board president Theresa Taylor urged the board to consider a public statement calling for guardrails or a moratorium on AI development, CalMatters reported.
The board has not issued a statement.
Why a pension fund
CalPERS is an investor, not a regulator or an AI developer. Taylor argued the issue is within the board’s duty to protect the fund: “If we don’t have retirees, if we don’t have state workers because of AI, we don’t have a pension fund.”
What to watch
The proposal so far is a suggestion to consider a statement, not a decision, and it covers two different options: guardrails or a moratorium. Whether the board adopts either would determine whether the discussion becomes more than a signal of concern.
