Visa unveils a stablecoin platform that lets banks mint and move digital dollars

Visa is building stablecoin rails, and it wants banks inside its own perimeter.

On July 16, 2026, Visa announced the Visa Stablecoin Platform: one Visa-managed environment where banks, fintechs and crypto firms can mint, redeem, hold and transfer stablecoins, plus a Wallet-as-a-Service layer. Instead of assembling custody, minting and settlement from separate vendors, institutions get all of it as a product.

What is inside

The platform launches with Open USD, a stablecoin recently introduced by the Open Standard consortium, and plugs into what Visa already runs: stablecoin settlement, stablecoin-linked cards, and cross-border money movement.

Under the hood are the controls treasury teams actually ask for before they touch any of this: dual-control workflows, audit logs, passkeys and transfer allow lists. That feature list says a lot about who this product is for. It is aimed at compliance departments, not crypto natives.

Two things to keep straight

First, this is in beta with select clients, not live across Visa’s network, despite headlines implying 200 million merchants are getting stablecoins tomorrow.

Second, this is not Visa versus Circle. Visa frames Open USD as complementing the stablecoins it already supports, including Circle’s USDC and Paxos’ USDG, rather than replacing them.

The real signal

The significance here is smaller and bigger at once. Smaller, because nothing changes for consumers this week. Bigger, because the company at the center of card payments now treats stablecoins as ordinary infrastructure worth productizing.

When Visa packages minting and redemption the way it packages fraud tooling, stablecoins stop being a crypto story and start being a banking product. The open question is whether customers want that: do you want your bank issuing stablecoins?
