Humanoid robots fight for a $1.45 million gold belt as EngineAI's URKL league opens

Humanoid robots are now fighting in front of a live crowd for a gold belt worth $1.45 million. On opening night, one lost its head and kept swinging.

On the evening of July 16, 2026, live combat began in EngineAI’s URKL, the Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend, at Shenzhen’s Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center. More than 200 teams from China, the US, Singapore and beyond entered; 32 made the cut. The Grand Final is set for December 2026 into January 2027.

An opening night that delivered

The debut produced its highlight instantly. White Eagle landed a high kick that knocked Matador’s head clean out of its socket, and the headless robot kept punching. Bullfighter then took a 3-2 decision over White Eagle in a five-round contest. Ip Man star Donnie Yen presented the awards.

Same robot, different code

Every team fights with the same machine: EngineAI’s T800, a full-size humanoid standing 173cm, provided by the organizers. Standardizing the hardware turns the whole competition into a control problem. The winner is whoever writes better balance, perception and impact response software, not whoever bought the better robot.

That is the part worth watching beyond the spectacle. A humanoid that stays upright while being hit, recovers from a bad step, reacts to an unpredictable opponent, and apparently even fights on without its head is solving exactly the problems that keep robots out of real workplaces. The spectacle is the funding mechanism for the engineering.

The stakes and the lineage

The champion takes a 10kg pure gold belt valued at 10 million yuan, roughly $1.45 million. EngineAI bills URKL as the world’s first commercialized humanoid combat league, though humanoid robot fighting itself debuted at Hangzhou’s Mecha Fighting Series back in May 2025.

Real Steel, the film that imagined all this, was set in 2020. We are six years late, but the arena is finally real.
