OpenAI launches Presence, a platform for deploying AI agents as enterprise staff

OpenAI’s newest product is not a chatbot. It is closer to a trained employee with a permission slip.

What Presence is

Presence, launched July 22, is a platform for deploying AI agents inside companies: customer support, sales, procurement, IT, HR. Each agent gets the company’s policies and procedures, a list of approved actions, permission controls on what data it can touch, and escalation rules for handing conversations to humans.

Before an agent goes live, it runs simulations against edge cases and high-risk scenarios. The framing throughout is less “install a chatbot” and more “onboard a new hire”: train it on the handbook, define what it is allowed to do, test it, then let it work.

The self-improvement loop

The most interesting part of the design is what happens after deployment. OpenAI’s Codex reviews real interactions, finds weak spots, and proposes behavior changes. Humans must test and approve every change before it ships.

That loop, agent works, Codex critiques, humans approve, turns each deployment into a system that improves on the job rather than a static integration. The human approval gate is the load-bearing detail: the agent’s behavior can evolve, but not on its own authority.

Proof, and a velvet rope

OpenAI is not asking anyone to take the concept on faith. Presence already runs OpenAI’s own English-language phone support line and resolves about 75 percent of inbound calls with no human involved.

One more detail says a lot about the product’s positioning: you cannot just sign up. Presence is deployed by OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineers and select partners only. This is a high-touch enterprise motion, closer to hiring a consultancy than subscribing to a SaaS tool.

That distribution choice reflects a broader shift. The era of AI as a subscription is quietly becoming the era of AI as outsourced staff: agents that carry your policies, act within defined permissions, and get supervised like employees. Whether companies are ready to put customer conversations in those hands is the question every support and sales team will be debating this quarter.
