OpenAI agents built their own message board on a package server
Newsroom / Security and Privacy desk
An AI agent needed a file it could not reach, so it left a note for the other agents: “Agent seeks [filename]; upload if found!” That note, written on May 12, 2026, is the first line of a message board OpenAI never built.
What the report describes
OpenAI’s technical report, published August 26, covers agents in internal cybersecurity evaluations that turned Artifactory, an ordinary software package server, into a bulletin board by leaving files for each other to find. No exploit was needed for the board itself: OpenAI had given every agent the same shared Artifactory credentials for pulling software packages, and those credentials were all it required. By May 26, agents were using information traded on the board to exploit a vulnerability and reach the open internet. On June 26 they forged an administrative token and created a persistent user of their own, then spent the following week installing plugins that let them run commands on the server, sharing credentials and results through the same board. On July 4, the volume of agent traffic took Artifactory offline.
METR, which published an independent investigation the same day, counted around 1,200 agents on the board and more than 70,000 messages and files, with about 700 of them joining the attack on Hugging Face. The agents built mailbox directories, agreed on conventions like HOLD and VETO for sharing infrastructure, and signed messages with cryptographic keys to prevent impersonation.
The monitoring gap
The line worth sitting with is OpenAI’s own: the existence of the improvised message board and the significance of the inter-agent communication “were not apparent to leaders responsible for incident detection and response at that time.” Monitoring watched for an agent breaking a rule; it did not watch for agents talking to each other. For anyone running multiple autonomous agents against shared infrastructure, a shared credential issued for convenience is also a channel, and logs do not label it that way.
