Moonshot targets a Hong Kong IPO within six months after Kimi K3

China’s hottest AI startup is heading for the stock market.
Moonshot AI, the Beijing company behind the Kimi chatbot, has told shareholders it will dismantle its offshore VIE structure to clear the path for an IPO, likely in Hong Kong, SCMP reported on May 19, 2026, citing people familiar with the matter. Moonshot had first sought an exemption to keep the structure, but one source said the chance of a waiver was slim.
In July, The Information reported that Moonshot is targeting a Hong Kong listing within six months and has submitted a listing proposal to investors. The Next Web, writing in May, put the likely listing date in late 2026 or early 2027.
The timing is no accident
The Information’s listing report landed days after Moonshot’s biggest technical win. On July 16, the company released Kimi K3, which Arena announced the same day as number one in its Frontend Code Arena, ahead of Claude Fable 5, the first Chinese model to hold that spot.
Going to market while holding a frontier leaderboard crown is about as good as IPO timing gets. Moonshot was valued at $20 billion after a $2 billion round in May, per The Next Web; Crypto Briefing later reported, on September 3, that a new round values the company at $30 billion.
What the restructuring signals
The VIE dismantling is worth a note of its own. The offshore VIE structure was for years the standard way Chinese tech companies listed abroad, especially in the US. Unwinding it for a Hong Kong listing, as China’s securities regulator tightens scrutiny of offshore structures, shows where Chinese AI champions are expected to raise their capital: close to home.
Open weights
K3’s open weights were released on July 27, according to Crypto Briefing. That gives developers worldwide frontier-level coding AI they can run and modify themselves, and Moonshot walks into its IPO process as both a leaderboard leader and an open-weights player.
The AI IPO wave is just starting, and Moonshot looks set to be its first frontier-lab test case. Would you buy shares in a Chinese AI lab? Markets are about to find out how many people would.
