Hyundai rebrands as a physical AI company with Nvidia and Waymo in tow

Hyundai wants to be judged as a physical AI company, not a carmaker.

At the San Francisco AI Summit on July 25, Executive Chair Chung Eui-sun unveiled a strategy to transform Hyundai Motor Group into a physical AI company. The scope goes well beyond cars: autonomous vehicles, robotics, AI factories and connected urban infrastructure, all under one umbrella.

The concrete pieces

This is not just a slogan. The announcement came with named partnerships:

  • A Robot Reference Platform built with Nvidia
  • A strategic partnership with Waymo
  • Boston Dynamics, a Hyundai company, working with Google DeepMind

Between them, those three tie Hyundai into the leading chipmaker of the AI boom, one of the most advanced autonomous driving companies, and one of the top AI research labs. For a company still best known for sedans and SUVs, it is a deliberate repositioning.

Part of a bigger Korean push

Hyundai’s announcement slots into a national pattern. Samsung used the same summit to outline its own AI expansion across chips and robotics, on top of its June plan of roughly $260 billion for new fabs in Gwangju and $36 billion for HBM factories.

Taken together, South Korea is tying chips, physical AI and data centers into one national industrial strategy. The country’s biggest conglomerates are aligning around the same thesis: the next decade of AI will be won not just in software, but in the machines that give AI a body, and in the silicon that powers them.

What to watch

The test for Hyundai will be whether the physical AI framing produces products that feel different from what the car business would have shipped anyway. A robot platform with Nvidia, a Waymo alliance and Boston Dynamics working alongside DeepMind is a strong starting hand.

Would you buy a robot with a Hyundai badge? The company is betting that question will sound normal sooner than it seems.
