AI in content creation just got a rare public reckoning. It started with a 55-minute Ask Hank Anything episode, uploaded to the Complexly channel on July 30, 2026. A clip from a “Future Hank” segment circulated, and viewers said the language sounded like it came from ChatGPT.
The answer, in his own words
Green answered at length on r/nerdfighters, from his own account. His opening line: “I’m mortified that I have let so many people down and I think I understand how that happened.”
He acknowledged relying “too heavily on AI as a research aid”, while maintaining that he used it to locate academic papers and resources rather than to form his opinions. He also said the dopamine he got from interacting with large language models and producing ever more content had become unhealthy, and that both his wife Katherine and his brother John Green had raised concerns.

A Reddit user on r/ClaudeAI says he woke up to two Anthropic invoices, one for a Max 20x subscription and one for auto-recharge extra usage, on a plan he writes he "never knowingly signed up for," then watched his usage climb from 11 percent at 11:09 to 100 percent at 11:40 with no active session. He also found his spending limit set to 2,000 euros. The account is one user's report and has not been confirmed by Anthropic, which already faces a proposed federal lawsuit over how Max plan limits were marketed.
