xAI brings Grok to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as a free add-on

xAI just put Grok inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, and it did not charge for the privilege. The add-on went live in the Google Workspace Marketplace on July 24: one install covers all three apps, no waitlist, no subscription required.

What the add-on actually does

The integration is more than a chat sidebar. In each app, Grok plugs into the work itself:

• In Sheets, it answers questions about your data and cites the exact cells it used, writes and fills formulas, inserts charts, and reruns scenarios when you change an assumption
• In Slides, it turns an outline into a full deck, researching from the web and X, and can extend an existing deck in its theme
• In Docs, it turns rough notes into a structured draft and fixes grammar in place

The cell-citation detail in Sheets is the kind of feature that separates a demo from a tool. If the assistant shows which cells fed its answer, you can actually check its work.

Three days before the Workspace launch, Grok also landed in Microsoft Outlook. That version sits behind X Premium and SuperGrok plans, priced from $8 to $300 a month. The Workspace version costs nothing.

The pricing split says a lot about whose users xAI wants. Making the Google-side integration free is a straightforward play for reach inside the productivity suite where a large share of office work already happens, while the Microsoft-side integration monetizes through xAI’s existing subscription tiers.

The question to ask before installing

One honest note before you click install: an assistant that reads your spreadsheets is an assistant that reads your spreadsheets. The convenience and the exposure are the same feature viewed from two angles.

If you work with client data, the sensible first step is not a prompt, it is a question to your workspace admin about what your organization allows. Free is an attractive price for an AI assistant in your documents. Whether it is the right price depends on what is in those documents.
