Google renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook as the brand consolidates
NotebookLM is gone. Well, the name is.
Google has renamed its research tool to Gemini Notebook (announced July 16-18, 2026, per 9to5Google). The product stays a standalone app, but gets the Gemini brand, a blue-purple gradient logo, Drive sync, and soon a spot inside Google Search’s AI Mode.
The user base being rebranded is not small: over 30 million people and more than 600,000 organizations.
The fine print is the real upgrade
Beyond the logo, there is substance in the details. The Gemini 3.5 + Antigravity upgrade that AI Ultra subscribers got last month is coming to the much cheaper AI Pro tier.
That means the agentic research stack, a secure cloud computer that writes and runs code against your sources, lands in mainstream plans. For a tool that started as a smart way to chat with your documents, that is a meaningful jump: mainstream subscribers get an agent that can actually compute over their material, not just summarize it.
The background story
The rename also says a lot about Google’s year. Gemini 3.5 Pro has now missed its launch window three times, and Google even registered “Gemini 3.6 Flash” as a stopgap model name.
Put those two facts side by side and the pattern is hard to miss: the branding is consolidating faster than the flagship model is shipping. Everything Google makes is being pulled under the Gemini name, from search to notebooks, while the model that name is supposed to showcase keeps slipping.
What users should expect
Practically, existing users keep the same product with a new name, plus Drive sync now and a Search AI Mode integration later. The deeper change arrives with the Pro-tier agentic stack, which turns the notebook from a reading companion into something closer to a research assistant that does the work. Just remember what it used to be called.
