Gemini 3.5 Pro delayed again after missing Google's internal goals, Bloomberg reports

Google’s next flagship model is stuck, and much of the internet spent the week reporting the opposite.

On July 16, 2026, Bloomberg reported that Gemini 3.5 Pro has been delayed again after falling short of Google’s internal goals. Ten current and former employees described a model that keeps missing the bar. There is no new launch date, and Alphabet shares dipped on the news.

What Google is actually saying

Google’s own statement is careful: it is “currently testing 3.5 Pro, an upgraded Flash model, and other models with partners.” DeepMind’s model page still says 3.5 Pro is coming soon.

The timeline makes the slip visible. Back on May 19, when Google announced Gemini 3.5 Flash, it said Pro was already running internally and would roll out “next month.” That was June. It is now mid-July, with no date on the calendar.

The leak that was not a launch

Meanwhile, a wave of posts insisted 3.5 Pro was shipping on July 17 with a 2 million token context window. That claim came from a single leak, recycled across aggregator sites, none of them naming a source. Google never announced any of it.

It is worth remembering the next time a spec sheet goes viral before the company says a word. A confident-looking number is not a launch date, and aggregators repeating each other is not confirmation.

Bad timing

The delay stings more because of when it landed: the same week a Chinese open model took the top spot on a frontier coding leaderboard. While competitors post leaderboard wins, Google’s flagship keeps missing its own bar internally, at least according to the people Bloomberg spoke to.

The open question is which story this turns out to be. Is Google genuinely behind, or simply refusing to ship something mediocre under a flagship name? Both readings fit the facts so far, and until 3.5 Pro actually lands, the gap between Google’s branding momentum and its model pipeline stays the most interesting thing about it.
