Claude Fable 5 now runs on usage credits for Pro and Team Standard

Claude Fable 5 is back in the top subscriptions, but on Pro it quietly spends credits.

Since July 20, 2026, Anthropic has included Fable 5, its most powerful model, in all Max plans and Team Premium seats at up to 50% of weekly usage limits. Pro and Team Standard plans do not include it. There it runs only on usage credits, priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. That is double the API price of Opus 4.8. Eligible Pro and Team Standard users received a one-time $100 credit, which had to be activated by August 2, 2026 and expired on September 17, 2026.

The catch for subscribers

Even the included access has a ceiling. Max and Team Premium users who use up their Fable allowance can keep going on usage credits or switch to another model to stay within plan limits. On Pro and Team Standard, Fable 5 is now pay-as-you-go from the first message, the introductory credit having expired.

There is context that softens the picture somewhat: the higher tiers got the model back in their plans. For Pro subscribers, though, the top model is metered.

What this means for you

A few practical steps are worth taking before the change catches you mid-task:

• Check whether your workflow quietly depends on Fable 5. If your default model is Fable 5, on Pro every one of those messages now draws on credits.
• Set a credit cap. Usage pricing without a cap is an open tab.
• Keep a cheaper model selected for routine work, so your Fable allowance or credits go where they matter.

The smartest model is now the most expensive habit

The bigger shift here is behavioral. When the best model is included in a flat plan, you use it for everything. When it runs a meter, every prompt has a price, and the rational move is to route work deliberately: the frontier model for the tasks that need it, cheaper models for the rest.

That is the discipline this change forces. Use Fable 5 on purpose, not by default. The question for heavy users is whether the top model is worth paying per token, or whether Opus 4.8 at half the price is close enough for daily work.
