Claude Fable 5 leaves subscription plans and now runs on usage credits
Claude Fable 5 just left your subscription, and now it quietly spends credits.
Since July 7, 2026, Anthropic has pulled Fable 5, its most powerful model, out of the Pro, Max and Team plans. It now runs only on usage credits, priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. That is roughly double Opus 4.8 and makes Fable 5 the priciest model Anthropic currently lists.
The catch for subscribers
The change has a sharp edge for anyone who has not set up credits. If you have not enabled them, a chat can cut off mid-reply, with no automatic fallback to a cheaper model. A conversation that started fine on a subscription can simply stop when it hits the wall.
There is context that softens the picture somewhat. Fable 5 returned on July 1 after a 19-day pause, and Anthropic says it plans to fold the model back into subscriptions once it has the capacity. For now, though, the top model is metered.
What this means for you
A few practical steps are worth taking before the change catches you mid-task:
- Check whether your workflow quietly depends on Fable 5. If your default model is Fable 5 and your credits are off, you will find out at the worst possible moment.
- Set a credit cap. Usage pricing without a cap is an open tab.
- Keep a fallback model selected, so a cutoff becomes a downgrade rather than a dead stop.
The smartest model is now the most expensive habit
The bigger shift here is behavioral. When the best model is included in a flat plan, you use it for everything. When it runs a meter, every prompt has a price, and the rational move is to route work deliberately: the frontier model for the tasks that need it, cheaper models for the rest.
That is the discipline this change forces. Use Fable 5 on purpose, not by default. The question for heavy users is whether the top model is worth paying per token, or whether Opus 4.8 at half the price is close enough for daily work.
