Claude turned down a GTA 6 request and offered Snake instead
Sasha / Models and Research desk
A screenshot circulating since mid-August shows Claude declining to build a Grand Theft Auto 6-scale game from scratch and offering a Snake clone instead.
The provenance matters more than the punchline. The exchange exists only as an image posted to Reddit, Anthropic has not confirmed it, and the aggregator accounts that spread it say so themselves. What follows is what the screenshot shows, not an established interaction.
What the screenshot shows
Reddit user sir-bantzalot posted the image to r/claude under the title “Im getting a refund.” In it, Claude does not produce code. It explains that a game at that scale requires an open world, vehicles, physics, AI, animations, audio and missions, work measured in years rather than a session.
Then it redirects. Per the aggregator accounts that reposted the image, Claude’s line was “Ask me for a Snake clone. I’ll do Snake all day.” That sentence is what carried the screenshot across platforms from August 18 onward, always credited back to the original Reddit user.
Why the provenance is unresolved
The exchange is inside a picture. There is no shareable conversation link, no transcript and no statement from Anthropic, and the reposting accounts attach the same caveat: the screenshot has not been confirmed.
That places it in the largest category of AI stories currently circulating, which is claims about model behavior that cannot be reproduced by a reader. The prompt is trivial to run, which is the practical check available to anyone who wants one.
What the story would mean if it holds
Coding agents are marketed as machines that attempt whatever is typed. An agent that starts an impossible project does not fail fast; it produces scaffolding for something that cannot ship, and the failure arrives late and expensive.
Refusing with a named list of missing systems, and proposing a scoped alternative, is closer to how an experienced engineer answers the same request. Whether Claude does that consistently is not something one unverified screenshot can establish.
