Blue Cross blames hospital AI for $942 million in extra costs
A Blue Cross Blue Shield Association study released on September 24, 2026 says more intense care added $942 million in costs for Blue Cross plans over two years, compared with 2023, Reuters reports. Secondary conditions, illnesses separate from the one being treated, drove $653 million in costs between 2024 and 2025. According to the association, providers use AI that scans patient records, and ambient scribes that listen to visits and draft notes, to find more of those conditions. In bowel surgeries, the study found no matching rise in treatment: diagnoses of secondary conditions such as partial intestinal blockages rose 55% from early 2023 to late 2025, yet anemia diagnoses did not bring more blood transfusions.
